Blog #529

Here's Blog Quote # 529...

"Reflect upon your present blessings-- of which every man has many--not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some."
-Charles Dickens-

Aah...a timely message from the Scrooge himself. This is a phenomenal quote to post somewhere that you frequent often. It's a tremendous reminder.

Key words here are 'MANY'  and 'SOME.'
While it's true that all of us have our misfortunes and crosses to bear, we also have blessings that are plentiful. The blessings outweigh the troubles by far.

If there is any doubt of this, just for starters--go through the number of body parts and see how many of them are functioning versus not functioning. And functioning  well, may we add.

That's just the beginning. Go through your assets, your possessions, your friends, your memories, and keep going. All of us have so much to be grateful for...we just need to begin thinking and focusing on those, rather than the fewer amount of setbacks and misfortunes.
Give this some thought, and it should make more and more sense, after pondering.
Thanks Charles- for the reminder!

Blog Quote #528

Here's Blog quote #528...

"A failure is a man who has blundered but is not able to cash in on the experience."
-Elbert Hubbard-

In the middle of a wonderful book 'The Magic of Thinking Big.'
One of the chapters discusses failures  and what IS a failure. More importantly it discusses that all of us experience 'temporary failures.' Things just don't always go as planned, or as smooth and perfect as we originally map them out. That's called LIFE!

The lesson here is not to use the old, "Oh well- that's the way the cookie crumbles" or "That's the way the ball bounces. It's luck or fate. nothing we can do about that."

No-- the way to success-- and avoiding  failure-- is to learn from the mistake, mishaps or the roadblocks that we all run into. 'Cash in,' as Hubbard says,  by taking what you can from the experience and get better next time.  The best keep trying and experimenting and learning. Next time they are a little better. Again they get set back, and learn still more. Get up, keep moving and apply the lessons of each the temporary failure to future SUCCESSES.

Great advice

Blog Quote #527

Here's Blog quote #527...

"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."
-Dr Wayne Dyer-

Wait a theckond( our Daffy Duck imitation)...
Is there some trickery in this statement or  is it just one of those quotes that make you stop and think? And think some more. HMM...

Yes, things do look mighty different-- when you look at them from another angle.

Ever "sleep on a problem?"  Then the next morning suddenly  you see things in a different light, and the answers are so vividly clear.

Anything you've been struggling with that you'd like to look at, with some new glasses?

Blog Quote #526

Here's Blog Quote #526...

"In nothing do men more nearly approach the gods than in doing good to their fellow man."
-Cicero-

Frequently when I type, while in a hurry--  the word 'good' appears as god.. HMMM.
Always makes me stop and think of the synergism of the two.

Suggestion for the day:
Go out and do some good today. It will warm at least two hearts-- the recipient, and yours!
As a bonus, perhaps more than two of you will reap rewards from a good deed. Some may rub off on others. The deed may even spur recipients to go out and share good actions with still more people. Kind of like the pay it forward, or RAOK(random act of kindness) motion...

Sounds like a winner to me.

Blog Quote #525

Here's Blog Quote #525...

Nobody reads a mystery to get to the middle. They read it to get to the end.If it's a letdown, they won't buy anymore. The first page sells that book. The last page sells your next book."
-Mickey Spillane-

Similar to any story, poem or article you read( or write). When you start the story it should be interesting off the bat. When you finish the story, it should be something that people will remember-- so they want to come back for more.

Let's say the story has 10 points, or paragraphs. Ideally, you'd like to have 10 for 10 strong paragraphs. Doesn't always work that way though.

So here's a suggestion--- if you only have 5 really good points, a decent  idea to have two of them listed first and second, then one in the middle, then close strong with the last two. Just a few thoughts when writing...

Too many people spend money that haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like."

Things that make you go HMMM...

Blog Quote #523

Here's Blog Quote #523...

"You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call 'failure,' is not the falling down, but the staying down."
-Mary Pickard-

This is a great quote to keep handy to share with others. For whom doesn't, at some point in life, need a nudge to keep going? To persevere. To press on. Regardless of what it is, that we need some cheering and encouragement-- we all do,  and we all will.

Thus as Ms Pickard suggests- the so called FRESH START, is in our minds.
It's a decision we make. To get up. To dust off, and to march forward.

Thanks for the nudge, Mary Pickard.
Share on to someone you know-- that may need a little boost or encouragement.

Blog Quote #522

Here's Blog Quote #522...

You can't reach for anything new if your hands are still full of yesterday's junk."
-Louis Smith-

I think this is the authors way of saying-- yesterday is over. Good or bad, it's in the books.
Leave it there.

Start today anew. Find the sink, wash those hands clean, and let's start today-- Fresh and Positive.

The old line goes, yesterday is past us, tomorrow is the future,  and today is a gift. That is why they call it the present.

Live your life in the present. It's all you have right now, right this moment!
Good advice Louis!

Here's Blog #515

Here's Blog Quote #515...
There is no such thing on earth as an uninteresting subject; the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person.
-G.K. Chesterton-

This is so true. The other day my family and I attended a Memorial day parade. We were a bit tired from the previous 2 days activities. There was quite a bit going on, yet, listening to my daughter talk to a friend.. "We didn't stay long, it was a bit boring."

It wasn't the party that was boring. It was US. We just weren't into it.

They often say when people are bored it's because they themselves are boring. Maybe not in life, but during that moment. We-- are responsible for bringing life to wherever we go. Next time someone says things are boring... put a mirror in front of them.

HMMM .

"I've always known I was gifted, which is not the easiest thing in the world--for a person to know.
Here's why-- Because you're not responsible for your gift, only what you do with it."
-Hazel Scott-

What a superb point, Ms Scott!
So we arent responsible for HAVING the gifts we have--but we are responsible for UTILIZING them to their fullest potential.

Waste is a terrible thing.
Don't waste what you have. Eessh---what others would give,  for what we have...

"A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity. The order varies for any given year."
-Paul Sweeney-

Found this in a humorous book.
It seems that this quote could be taken as either funny or serious and-- more true than one thinks.

Apparently, if it can swing either way, it's an ambidextrously awesome quote!
Good stuff.

Blog Quote #512

Here's Blog Quote #512...
"Conversation means being able to disagree, and still continue the conversation."
-Dwight MacDonald-

Ever stop to think how irksome life would be if we all agreed on everything? If each person thought the same thing. Funny how like thinking  brings us to a common place with another man--yet if it happened all the time, how mundane.

It's a pretty big world out there. There is so much to see, learn, and experience. And all those different experiences are what makes up people's thoughts, beliefs, and opinions.

Embrace a nice discussion. Discussions are two people talking back and forth. One talks, the other listens. They alternate. Discussions are not arguments/ disagreements. They may include arguments and disagreements, yet people should, as Mc Donald suggests, be able to have differences of opinions and carry on the conversation/ discussion.

Blog Quote #505

Here's Blog Quote #505...
Teaching a child not to step on a caterpillar, is as valuable to the child as it is to the caterpillar."
-Bradley Miller-

WOW.. if Miller is correct, then this must be extremely valuable.
As in life or death valuable.
To the caterpillar, its squuiisshh into and onto the next life, so to it- it's as important as it gets.

Thus.. it must be pretty important to the child as well. And we AGREE THAT IT IS.
It's all about respect for life, for our fellow creatures on the planet, and for nature.

Its also an exercise in curiosity.
Abuse of power.
Killing innocent things.
Co- existing and getting along with others.

We are likely scratching the surface on the amount of life lessons available here--
Lessons that could go into having a discussion with a youngster on the value of not wiping out a soon to be beautiful butterfly, with one step.

So as Crosby, Stills, and Nash once sang, "Teach-- your children well..."

Blog Quotes # 503 and 504

-Sean Evans, Dream Manager-

#504...

-Mark Twain-

Two great quotes with the same message:
Read.
And manage your money well.

On the money--- if you don't know how to, learn or get some assistance. Don't waste it away.
On reading--- there are so many benefits to reading, that it's a crime and a shame for those who can, and choose not to.

Blog Quote #500 (milestone)

Heres Blog Quote #500..
"The bad you hear about  a man may not be true, but when people say something good about him, you can bet on it."
-Robert Quillen-
Hey, hey, hey, we made #500,  and are on our way!  Not the easiest task-- as most Blogs start and finish like a kennel club race. So--- thought we'd make sure, number 500 was worth talking about.

I believe Quillen is eluding to 2 seperate issues here. First is gossip. It's rampant, unnecessary, and often not true. People toss around comments and critiques like pennies into a wishing well. His thought-- take bad comments with a filter, and consider the source. It may be 100% true, but it may not be?

Now, his second point... involves when good is said about a person. We have no stats for this but will speculate that the amount of criticism to compliments are probably about a 19-1 ratio-- maybe worse.
People are quick to complain and criticize. Very lethargic to compliment. Hebetudinous to say something nice. Why in the world-- we have no idea? It's just the way most humans are. Sad, but true.

So-- if something nice is said about someone, as long as it wasn't a best friend or relative, chances are that it's accurate. HMMM...

Blog Quote #494

Here's Blog Quote #494...
We must always TRY. How else would we know how excellent we can be?"
-Claire Denti-

What a great thought. Followed by an equally superb question.
I also like the assumption that we CAN BE excellent. Confidence and a positive attitude is more than half the battle.

Trying. It's a simple concept that some never attempt. And why not? We are only here a short time and why not find out what we can do?

Stats are-- we only use about 6-10% of our brain. I often wonder if the
usage of our ablilties is even a lower percentage.

The simplest example of trying, is to ask a question. If you don't ask, the answer is always NO. And it's stunning how many times that 'No' turns out to be a 'Yes' for those brave enough to inquire.

Another one is simply attempting something new, a thing you have never done before. We suggest getting out of that comfort zone and trying it. Go for it. You'll be glad you did. And you might be blown away-- as to what hidden talents and skills you have that you never knew about!

-Richard Armour-

Ever been with someone who never stops talking? How does it make you feel?

You know -- the old one way conversationist. Snooze. Yawn.
And be careful of the 'one upper.' The person that- no matter what you say, they have a better story, a more incredible feat, something to top whatever you just said.

Remember a dialogue is supposed to be an exchange of words BETWEEN two or more people. When one cuts off statements, hogs the conversation, or simply won't let you get a word in... how many times do you need to have an interaction with that person?

As the quote says--- let the other person speak, take a breather, a listen. Here's another statement we once heard.. "You can't learn anything when you are always listening to yourself speak. HMMM..

"When you own your own business, you only have to work half days. Your biggest challenge is to figure which 12 hours to work."
-Bill Tully-

As I sit here in the late hours of Good Friday, trying to wrap things up, I smile. This quote is so much truer, than any self-employed person wants to admit.

With that stated, that's part of the climb. Part of the fun. If it was easy it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying. Also, when something is done without much effort, anyone and everyone can do it, lessening the joy of the accomplishment.

In addition to that, what I strive for is for when I'm onto the next life--
if I can leave behind VALUE.

Might not be in the physical form, but lessons in character, integrity, honesty. Always trying to do the right thing. Be good to others. Help others. Less bad stuff. More good stuff. Less of Me and more about YOU.

-Ann Bradford-

Kind of a humorous quote, yet it's so true. Tell me that all of us, at times, don't have way too many negative thoughts cruising around in our brains daily.

I read somewhere that we have about 60,000 thoughts a day. Wonder just how many of them are negative?

Blog Quote #486

Here's Blog Quote #486...
"The person who is afraid to risk failure seldom has to face success."
-Coach John Wooden-

Ok-- we are on a roll here with the Coach.
Isn't this so true? Easy to stay in our comfort zone. Not do anything wild, out of the ordinary. Not risk some potential failure, disappointment, and of course, the critics. Sadly, the critics are usually in the stands, not risking anything either. Always simple to comment and find fault on the trials and tribulations of others.

But where is the fun in not trying something new? Something of a challenge. As the old saying goes.. "Don't be afraid to go out on a limb-- as that's where the fruit lies."

Always remember trying and failing-- 100% of the time-- trumps not trying and succeeding. For what has the non try-er succeeded at--other than Doing Nothing. The person who attempts is sure to learn something from the experience, and might just succeed. In actuality, with persistence, the tryer will very likely succeed. And what a wonderous feeling THAT is!

What I am certain of is-- I HAVE DEFINITELY learned much from my 3 dogs over the years. What I'd pass along to anyone who would listen is... GET ONE.
Could be your best move--- EVER.

Come to think of it--can't think of anything bad they've taught me, and a laundry list of good. My fellow humans-- of course learning plenty good... but there's stuff I' d like to erase from the memory bank as well. Perhaps too much?

Blog Quote #484

Here's Blog Quote#484...
"Cleanliness, neatness, politeness, and good manners are all qualities that should be characteristic of those who are a great influence on young people, and you certainly qualify for that category. Be a good example."
-Coach John Wooden-

As simple as it can be stated, your example matters. Everyone looks up to someone, and someone looks up to you.

This goes beyond words. Actions matter big time as well. Actions need to be good ones. As St. Francis of Assisi once said "When necessary, use words."

Hey, for most of the formation years, we are all the kids have. So, yes it is a rather large responsibility. Like it or not, they are going to copy our actions, so let's make the duplication process something we can be proud of.

Blog Quote #483

Here's Blog Quote #483...
"In most things success depends on knowing how long it takes to succeed."
-Montesquieu-

A brief quote that could have many interpretations. Oddly if most people knew how much hard work would be involved to succeed at what they set out to do, they'd likely never start.

Also ironic is the fact that whatever time line you plan on for success, add 1-3 years on top of your estimation.

With those stark comments stated, if one sets the mind up for success-- no matteer what( ie stick it out UNTIL it happens), then likely IT WILL HAPPEN.

So-- todays message: Plan for success, put in a nice extra buffer of time to succeed, and, be sure to stick with it. Finally, take the time to enjoy the fruits of the labor expended.

Blog Quote #482

Here goes Blog Quote #482...
"Those who praise anything I do and anything I say, they are not my good friends. Those who, with honest opinion, tell me my faults and my mistakes, they are my good friends."
-Isocrates-

At first blush this may seem backward or contradictory. The key word in this quote here is HONEST.

Do we want positive, supporting friends? Yes. Do we want caring friends who back us and believe in us? Of course. But we also want honest friends who will be straight with us, not puff smoke at us, and tell us all is rosy and bright, when they truly don't believe that it is. That's where the honest part comes in.

Theres an old saying in business, that if all the partners agree on everything, than all the partners are not needed. Good friends are there for us in thick and thin, but they are also up front with us and tell us what we need to know.

As my Mom used to say-- "You can say anything to anyone-- as long as you say it-- in a polite manner." I believe that is the true meaning of constructive criticism. It's a good thing as it's meant to be helpful.

Can you get any better of a question than this one?

Each and every one of us humans have the capabilities and potentials to do just that.

Quote #480

Here goes Blog Quote #480...
"Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy."
-Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf-

Think about it. A good strategy with no character... and what do you have? Not much. Even if it works out--you likely won't be able to sleep comfortably at night.

On the other hand, Good character with no strategy.. probably can live with that. And some of the times, even without a great plan, but good solid morals and ethics-- things somehow happen to turn out OK.

I believe Coach John Wooden said it best when he said... "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Your reputation is what other people think of you. Your character is WHO you really are."

Lose your character-- there truly isn't much else worth having, is there?

Quote #479

Here goes Blog quote #479...
"History has demonstrated that the most notable winners encountered heartbreaking obstacles, before they triumphed. They finally won by their defeats."
-B.C.Forbes-

The older I get, the more educated I become, the more convinced I am--- that FAILURE is a good thing. It teaches lessons. It toughens us up. It paves valuable wisdom for the later conquests that will follow.

Perhaps failure should be renamed "Temporary setback to success." Sounds much better, doesn't it? All this assumes that you keep going and don't give up.

There is an old Japanese proverb that says, "Fall down seven times, stand up eight." Keep standing up, and failure will melt away like the snow in springtime.

"When spiders unite, they can tie up a lion."
-Ethiopian Proverb-

Give this concise quote a quick ponderance. It's very powerful when you think of the magnitude of little things joining together to form a massive, unbreakable bond.

This proverb gives a whole new meaning to the team concept.
What one cannot do alone---(s)he can achieve monumental tasks together.

Join up, team up, gather, and perform great deeds and works!

Quote #477

Here goes Blog quote #477...
"Promises are like crying babies in a theatre, they should be carried out at once."
-Norman Vincent Peale-

Genius comment, Mr Peale. What an analogy!

Anyone disagree?
Then why do so many say so much, and follow through on so little?

A quick litmus test---
How do you feel when someone promises something to you- and then proceeds not to come through? What goes through your mind? Your stomach?

Then remember that--- the next time you make a commitment to someone. Regardless of size, great or small--- Deliver on your promise.
If we all commit to keeping our commitments and promises.. we'll save each and every one of us plenty of heartache and disappointment.

Blog Quote #476

Here's Blog Quote #476...
When someone asked the newly elected president, what he was going to do about his enemies, he replied:
"I am going to destroy them. I am going to make them my friends."
-Abraham Lincoln-

What a great, great answer.
I believe I've read this from the great Og Mandino. From the talented Zig Ziglar. And from the greatest selling book on the planet, the Bible.

Perhaps others have responded to the enemy question as well. With LOVE. The wonderful story 'Tuesdays with Morrie' says that Love is the answer to all.

It's a powerful answer. One that many of us others--- faced with the question on what to do with enemies... might also want to consider?

Lincoln was a smart man. A very smart man.
